Those of you following from the Paper Tape days may remember an interview I did with Kate Winter about a story archetype she was researching called Girls Underground. It her words, the archetype is found in stories "in which a girl undertakes a journey through a labyrinthine otherworld with several companions, confronts an adversary, and saves someone (or the world) while becoming greater than she had been." The archetypes is found in stories as diverse as Alice in Wonderland, the Mesopotamian "Descent of Inanna" myth, and the movie Labyrinth.
Kate has been chronicling the archetype on her blog for almost a decade, and now she has taken all of her research and put it into The Girls Underground Story Oracle. Reflecting it's emphasis on narrative, the deck describes the stages of the heroine's journey through the archetype in words on beautifully designed square cards with a subtly faded typewriter font.
The deck is currently only available on Kickstarter, and the project will only fund if the goal is met. As of this writing, the project is a little more than halfway there with 23 days to go. If you're interested in divination and looking for a deck based on something other than the RWS--I know I always am--you might want to check it out.
